Efes was an ancient Greek city located on the western coast of Anatolia within the borders of the Selçuk District of today's İzmir province. Its foundation dates back to 6000 BC in the Neolithic. Efes was included in the temporary list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1994, and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2015.
